1st Grade Trip to the Settler's Museum

How have schools changed over time? How has family life changed over time? These are a couple of questions that Mrs. Sage’s and Mrs. Catron’s first graders at Atkins Elementary could probably answer for you. These students visited the Settler’s Museum of Southwest Virginia on Wednesday, October 17th and received hands on instruction to see that past and present times are very different. A walk inside the farmhouse showed students that their store-bought clothes, electronic games, and microwave food were not around in 1890. The students sewed beanbags in the small one-room school with its familiar blackboard and American flag. Not present were the computers and workstations that they are familiar with in their large school building with many rooms. This visit was an excellent opportunity for students to cover one of Virginia’s standards of learning and have fun while they were doing it. We would also like to thank Tabb T’s for donating our t-shirts!!!

Field Trip to Frontier Museum in Staunton

On Thursday, October 4, 2007 ninety-five third, fourth and fifth graders from Atkins Elementary traveled to Staunton, Virginia to visit the Frontier Culture Museum. This museum is a living history museum featuring five historic, reconstructed working farms. The farms represent the daily lives of people who immigrated to America and helped to form our unique American culture.

The students from Atkins participated in a program entitled Frontier Settlement to Farmstead: Becoming an American Farmer. In this program the students visited a 1750 German farm and an 1820 American farm where they participated in hands-on activities and learned about survival during the early days.

Funding for this educational experience was provided by a grant from the Frontier Culture Museum.
