Chilhowie Elementary School has a Local Area Network that connects our classrooms, media center, and computer lab to a central server and router. The central server is a Windows server that houses our Alexandria library program, the Accelerated Reader database, and some electronic reference works. The Alexandria library program supports an electronic card catalog and automated checkouts, using a bar code reader.
The Accelerated Reader database contains comprehension tests for a number of books we have in the library. Students can take tests from computers located in their classroom, in the library or in the computer lab. The Accelerated Reader program tracks students' reading progress and is very popular with our students.
Our router is a Cisco 1600 series. It connects us to the School Board's Central Office in Marion by a 56K frame relay line. This setup provides full-time Internet access to the library, computer lab, and all classrooms.
Chilhowie Elementary is part of the AWS Worldwide School Weather Network. External sensors at the site measure wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, rain fall, light intensity, and barometric pressure.
