Steve Miller, principal of Marion Intermediate School, welcomed everyone to his school for the spring meeting of the Gifted Advisory Board on June 1, 2006.
Mr. Dave Bockes introduced Superintendent Jim Sullivan and assistant superintendent Dr. Mike Robinson. An introduction of Carol Sutton, Washington County Gifted Coordinator was made at that time. Principals then introduced parents in attendance.
Carol Sutton, via PowerPoint, discussed the "Twice Exceptional Learners." These were defined as students who were both gifted and learning disabled. Her presentation addressed descriptions of the twice-exceptional learner; definitions and characteristics of both gifted and learning disabled students. Strategies and scaffolding techniques were also talked about.
Mr. Bockes discussed the changing role of the Gifted Advisory Board and the need to expand the number of enrichment teachers. He then offered his personal thanks to enrichment teachers, parents, and school administrators.
Beth Fleshman conducted the business portion of the meeting and Kristie Comer read the minutes from the fall meeting.
Amy Wheeler discussed the upcoming Vantage Summer Enrichment Program.
Mr. Jim Sullivan concluded with some closing remarks in reference to expansion of staffing for the enrichment program, professional development for enrichment teachers, and in increase in technology for personnel working with gifted students.
Mr. Bockes adjourned the meeting.
