The Smyth County School Board met today in a joint meeting with the Smyth County Board of Supervisors with the following members present: James H. Campbell, Jesse Choate, Charles Doane, Jerry Catron, and Laura Hall.
Mr. Campbell, Chairman of the School Board, welcomed all that were present for this joint committee meeting.
Mr. Sullivan discussed some accomplishments of the Smyth County schools. These included performance on Adequate Yearly Progress Component of No Child Left Behind; twelve of thirteen schools in Smyth County are fully accredited through the Standards of Learning; and Smyth County was named "2002-2003 Super Quality School Division" by SACS.
Mr. Sullivan reviewed with the boards some expected facility and staffing needs for the 2004-2005 school year. Mr. Sullivan reported on the increase in the Virginia Retirement System's rate for the next school year.
Senator Joe Johnson and Delegate Phillip Puckett made a few closing remarks regarding funding for school systems and the Governor's proposed budgets.
Michael Roberts, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, thanked all that were present for attending.
Mr. Sullivan made a few closing remarks.
