Minutes of the January 16, 2007 Smyth County School Board Community Forum

Marion, Virginia

The Smyth County School Board met today at 5:00 P.M., at the Smyth Career & Technology Center, 147 Fox Valley Road, Marion, Virginia, in Classroom 7, with the following members present: Roger Nipper, Jerry Catron, Charles Doane, Laura Hall, Susan Sneed, and Jesse Choate. Kimberly Clark arrived at 5:05 P.M.

The meeting was scheduled for a Community Forum for input concerning the 2007-2008 School Board Budget and immediately followed by a continuation of the Monday, January 8, 2007, regular monthly school board meeting.

Laura Hall, Chairperson for the Smyth County School Board, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

On motion by Mr. Choate, seconded by Ms. Sneed, by 6-0 vote, the agenda was approved as presented. Kimberly Clark arrived after this vote was taken.

Dr. Michael M. Robinson, Superintendent, presented an overview of the 2007-2008 School Board Budget including some goals for the school system and some of the financial issues. Some budget items for consideration included salary increases, VRS increase, group life insurance, and instructional technology replacement cycle.

Time was allowed for individuals and representatives from businesses and organizations to speak. No individuals present spoke at this time.

Board members and the superintendent made some closing remarks about the budget.

On motion by Mr. Choate, seconded by Mrs. Clark, by 7-0 vote, the forum was adjourned and the meeting from Monday, January 8, 2007, was continued.
