Minutes of the March 20, 2007 Smyth County School Board Meeting

The Smyth County School Board met today in a continued meeting from Monday, March 12, 2007, immediately following the scheduled meeting at 6:00 P.M., for the Public Hearing on the 2007-2008 Smyth County School Board Budget in the board meeting room, 121 Bagley Circle, Marion, Virginia.

The meeting was continued for the purpose of discussing personnel.

CALL TO ORDER

Chairperson Hall called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

The roll was called by the clerk, and the following members were present: Laura Hall, Roger Nipper, Susan Sneed, Charles Doane, and Jerry Catron. Kimberly Clark and Jesse Choate were absent.

CLOSED SESSION

Pursuant to § 2.2-3711 of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, on motion by Mr. Nipper, seconded by Ms. Sneed, by 5-0 vote, a closed meeting was declared for the purpose of discussing the following: personnel issues as authorized by § 2.2-3711(A)(1) of the Code of Virginia.

On motion by Mr. Nipper, seconded by Mr. Catron, by 5-0 vote, closed session ended.

WHEREAS, the Smyth County School Board has convened a closed meeting on this date pursuant to an affirmative-recorded vote in accordance with the provision of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act; and

WHEREAS, § 2.2-3712(D) of the Code of Virginia requires a certification by this school board that such closed meeting was conducted in conformity with Virginia Law:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Smyth County School Board, by roll call, hereby certifies that, to the best of each member's knowledge (i) only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia Law were discussed and (ii) only such public business as were identified in the motion by which the closed meeting was convened were heard, discussed, or considered.

VOTE: Ayes: 5; Nays: 0. Kimberly Clark and Jesse Choate were absent.

ACTION ITEMS - CLOSED SESSION - (MOTION REQUIRED)

On motion by Ms. Sneed, seconded by Mr. Catron, by 5-0 vote, the board accepted the resignation of Denise Privett as an instructional aide at Marion Middle School, effective as of her last day of work.

On motion by Ms. Sneed, seconded by Mr. Nipper, by 5-0 vote, the board hired Jouette Groseclose as an instructional aide at Marion Middle School to replace Denise Privett, effective March 21, 2007.

On motion by Ms. Sneed, seconded by Mr. Doane, by 5-0 vote, the board hired Linda Brinkley as an assistant softball coach at Chilhowie High School, effective March 21, 2007.

On motion by Mr. Catron, seconded by Ms. Sneed, by 5-0 vote, the meeting was adjourned.
