The Smyth County School Board met for a called meeting at 6:00 P.M., with all members present. The purpose of the meeting was for a budget work session.
The agenda was approved as presented on motion of Mr. Grinstead, seconded by Mr. Choate.
Mr. Sullivan reported on the visit from Herb Cottrell, Director of Research and Information Services, VSBA. A full report of Mr. Cottrell’s findings and suggestions on the budget will be presented to the board.
Mr. Campbell reported on the budget committee’s meeting with the Board of Supervisors’ Budget Committee.
The board received a briefing from Mr. Sullivan on revenue estimates for 2003-2004.
Mr. Sullivan reviewed projected expenditures for the 2003-2004 operating fund budget. The projected expenditure cost reflected 1% and 2.25% salary increases.
Mr. Sullivan reviewed health insurance numbers and the projected cost of increasing health insurance payments by $20.00 per month. He also reviewed the cost to increase accumulated sick leave payout to $20.00 per day.
The board received copies of the following requests for reviewing:
Mr. Sullivan reviewed capital outlay obligations and priorities.
Mr. Sullivan reported that Smyth County had missed a total of 17 days of school due to inclement weather. The board discussed possible ways for these days to be made up. The board will make a decision at its next meeting.
On motion of Mr. Grinstead, seconded by Mr. Catron, the meeting was then adjourned.
