The Smyth County School Board met today in a called meeting at 5:30 P.M., with the following members present: Jesse Choate, Laura Hall, Roger Nipper, Charles Doane, Jerry Catron, and Kimberly Clark.
The meeting was called to consider budget updates and personnel issues.
Elizabeth Roberts, Business Decision Support Analyst, reviewed with the board the following items: Revenue Comparisons for the County School Operating Fund and County School Debt and Capital Outlay Fund; General Assembly Entitlement Sheet; Draft Expenditure Budget; Proposed Operating Fund and Capital Outlay Fund Budgets; and a calculation sheet for Basic Aid Funding.
Pursuant to §2.1-344(D) of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, on motion by Mrs. Hall, seconded by Mrs. Clark, the board voted unanimously to convene a closed meeting for the purpose of discussing the following specific matters: personnel issues as authorized by §2.1-344(A)(1) of the Code of Virginia.
On motion by Mr. Catron, seconded by Mr. Doane, the board returned to the open meeting.
WHEREAS, the Smyth County School Board has convened a closed meeting on this date pursuant to an affirmative-recorded vote in accordance with the provision of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act:
WHEREAS, §2.1-344(D) of the Code of Virginia requires a certification by this school board that such closed meeting was conducted in conformity with Virginia Law;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Smyth County School Board, by roll call, hereby certifies that, to the best of each member's knowledge (i) only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed and (ii) only such public business as were identified in the motion by which the closed meeting was convened were heard, discussed, or considered.

On motion by Mrs. Hall, seconded by Mr. Nipper, the board voted to accept the resignations of Hope S. Trivette, Title I Supervisor & Parent Liaison, Smyth County School Board, and H. Wayne Trivette, Principal of Atkins Elementary School.
On motion by Mrs. Clark, seconded by Mr. Catron, the board voted to accept the resignation of Debby Hanshew as golf coach at Marion Senior High School. The motion passed with 5 ayes and 1 nay.
On motion by Mr. Catron, seconded by Mr. Doane, the board voted to accept the recommendation of the superintendent to hire Richard K. Blevins as the Director of Human Resources/Auxiliary Services at the Smyth County School Board and for additional education in the human resource field to be carried out. The motion passed unanimously.
On motion by Mr. Catron, seconded by Mrs. Clark, the meeting was then adjourned.
