A Year Down Yonder

Diary of a Small Town Girl

My name is Mary Alice Dowdel, and I’m fifteen years old. I used to live in Chicago.  After the Great Depression, my family suffered from money scarcity. It was decided that I would live with my grandmother in Peeking, Illinois. I wasn’t too happy about that. In the end, it all worked out. My grandma is a very outdoorsy lady. She taught me how to hunt foxes, and to weasel my way in and out of situations.                                                                         The happiest moment of my retreat was meeting the ever so dreamy Royce McNabb. The last time I was in my grandmother’s house as a young woman, I was getting married to Royce. It was important to get married in my grandmother’s house. Out of all the places, I chose that one.

People tend to ask, “ Would you ever change anything in your life?” My answer to that would be, “ I would not change a single thing, because it only made me what I am today.”

Just be who you want to be, not what others want to see.
