In order to enroll in Smyth County Schools' pre-kindergarten program, your child must be four years old on or before September 30, 2010. A state certified copy of your child's birth certificate and verification of your family's income is needed when applying for this program. Your child will not be assessed for the program until this documentation is received at the enrolling school. If your child is accepted into the program, you must provide a physical exam completed within 12 months prior to the opening day of school and written documentation of age appropriate immunizations.
For kindergarten enrollment, your child must be five years old on or before September 30, 2010. A state certified copy of your child's birth certificate is required for enrollment. Knowing how many pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students Smyth County will have for the 2010-2011 school year is critical to our planning, especially in the assignment of teachers.

Census questionnaires will be mailed or delivered to every household in the United States in March 2010. The information on those questionnaires is one of the primary methods used by the Census Bureau to determine the population of towns, cities, counties, and states. Localities that have low questionnaire return rates can end up with understated population counts. Because population is used to determine representation in state legislatures and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the distribution of some tax revenues, those localities can end up being under-represented and receive less tax revenue than they should. In the 2000 Census, Smyth County's questionnaire return rate was less than the state average, according to Census officials.
The Census Bureau has asked Smyth County Schools to help spread the word about the importance of getting an accurate count for the 2010 Census.
