Reading Tips For Parents
"What can I do to help my child read?"
First of all, it is very important that parents (caregivers) routinely set aside a time between 10 and 15 minutes for reading each night. This special time which is dedicated to reading sends a powerful message to your child that you value time reading, as well as time with them. Listed below are some valuable tips to help your beginning reader.
Tips To Do With Your Child
- Guide your young reader to point to each word as that particular word is spoken. This is known as one-to-one match with voice print. Your child's teacher refers to this as "tracking".
- It is important that your young reader look at the picture clues when trying to figure out new words. Pictures help the young reader to make sense of the words which he/she is reading.
- Have fun with reading. Enjoy books together that interest your child. Visit your local library and check out our school resource center, with lots of books, reading games, and information.
Important Questions To Ask Your Child
- What would make sense there?
- What would sound right in terms of language patterns and semtence structure?
- Sound it out, does that word look right according to the letter/sound order?
