The Nurse Aide Program prepares students to provide services to residents under the supervision of licensed personnel. The graduate of the nurse aide eudcation shall be prepared:
The high school program is a 540-hour course. The Geriatric Unit is classroom theory 40 hours and Clinical is 58 hours. The student receives clinical experience (110 hours) at Valley Health Care, Chilhowie, VA, Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home, Marin, VA, and Basic Nurse Aide clinical at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, VA. Here are the projected costs for the 2006-2007 school year.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be awarded a Nurse Aide Certificate, three credits toward graduation, and a verified credit. The individual completing a nurse aide education program shall successfully complete the Nurse Aide (N.A.) Competency Evaluation. This is both written and manual examinations administered by The Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program. The cost is $80.00. The board will determine the minimum passing score on the competency evaluation. To renew the Nurse Aide Certificate every two years, the completed application with the required fee and verification of employment within the two preceding years must be sent to the Virginia State Board of Nursing. Anyone who has not worked in the two preceding years of the expiration date shall repeat an approved nurse aide education program and the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation prior to applying for recertification. A copy of your marriage certificate or court order must be sent to the board as evidence of a name change. Each certificate holder shall maintain a record of his current mailing address with the Board of Nursing.

Students rotate for one clinical day for career exploration in each of the following departments:
A Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support-CPR, for Health Career providers, and Basic First Aid course through the American Heart Association is included in the curriculum.
