We are extremely proud of the quality of the instructional staff in the Smyth County Public Schools. All of our teachers have college degrees, and 40% of our teachers have masters or other advanced degrees. In addition, teachers regularly participate in professional development activities that primarily focus on instructional strategies and are evaluated to make sure that their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. In short, all of our schools are staffed by qualified and dedicated teachers, and we are committed to ensuring that this continues to be the case.
As you may know, federal legislation known as the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) has been enacted. As parents of a student in Smyth County Public Schools, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. ESSA requires school systems to provide this information in a timely manner upon your request. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about your child’s classroom teachers:
In addition, Section 1112(e)(2) of ESSA states that parents of students in Title I schools have a right to know about state or division policies regarding student participation in any assessments mandated by ESSA, including any policy, procedure, or parental right to opt students out of such assessments.
If you would like to receive any of this information for the 2017-2018 school year, please contact the School Board Office at 276-783-3791.
