Online registration for the 2008 Southwest Virginia Technology Splash is open. The Splash is a day-long technology training event for educators. It will be held Thursday, July 31, at Patrick Henry High School in Washington County.

2008 School Census Under Way

Smyth County and Virginia's other school divisions have started collecting information for the 2008 Triennial School Census of School-Age Children. State law requires school divisions to collect information on all residents who are at least age 5, but have not reached age 20 on or before December 31, 2008. We conduct this census every three years. The triennial census count is used to distribute state sales tax revenue to school divisions as a part of Virginia's funding formula for public schools. Smyth County schools have distributed census forms to all students to take home to their parents or guardians. We are urging all Smyth County families with school-age children to respond to the census survey, even if their children attend private or parochial schools or are home-schooled. If we miss any school-age children in this survey, Smyth County and the towns of Chilhowie, Marion, and Saltville will receive less than their fair share of sales tax revenue.

If you get a busy signal when you dial Sugar Grove Combined School at 677-3311, please call the school's new number at 783-2459. The new Sugar Grove number is the result of the Smyth County School Board's adoption of a VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone system. The VoIP system can handle up to 23 simultaneous calls, so it is unlikely you will get a busy signal when you dial Sugar Grove by using the 783-2459 number. More information...

DonorsChoose.org Offers Innovative Way to Fund Classroom Projects

If you have an idea for a classroom project but need some help funding it, DonorsChoose.org may be the solution. DonorsChoose.org enables teachers to submit ideas they would like to implement in their classrooms. Potential donors can search for projects they would like to fund. DonorsChoose.org began accepting projects from Virginia schools in September 2007. So far, donors have contributed over $6,200 to fund 15 different projects.
