Annual Notification: Safe Storage of Firearms and Medications

The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. In accordance with Virginia law (§ 22.1-79.3), Smyth County Schools is providing families with annual information regarding the safe storage of firearms and prescription medications, firearm-related accidents, and youth firearm fatalities.

Properly securing firearms and medications can help prevent accidental injuries, unauthorized access, and tragedies involving children and adolescents.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to review the resources provided by the Virginia Department of Education, which include information about:

  • Safe storage of firearms.
  • Safe storage and disposal of prescription medications.
  • Firearm-related accidents and prevention.
  • Youth firearm fatality statistics.
  • Resources for self-harm, suicide, and violence prevention.
  • Additional guidance and support for parents and caregivers.

These resources are available on the Virginia Department of Education's Parent and Caregiver Resources for Self-Harm, Suicide, and Violence Prevention webpage:

https://www.doe.virginia.gov/parents-students/parent-resources/resources-for-self-harm-suicide-violence-prevention#!/

Smyth County Schools encourages all families to review these resources and discuss firearm and medication safety with members of their household. Working together, we can help provide a safer environment for all children.

Thank you for partnering with us to support the safety and well-being of our students.
