Virginia Governor Ralph Northam visited Marion Elementary School on Wednesday, March 10, as part of a trip to Southwest Virginia. The Governor and Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni spoke to teachers and staff, then toured some of the school's classrooms. Governor Northam and Secretary Qarni spoke highly of the efforts Smyth County has made to keep teaching students during the pandemic, and to provide meals to students when schools were physically closed.
Governor Northam is pictured speaking virtually with members of Marion Elementary School's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Team, as STEM team sponsor and MES school counselor Kay Richardson looks on. Ms. Richardson organized the team earlier this year, after winning a grant from the Virginia Department of Education to participate in the STEM Team Initiative.
