Smyth County Teacher named Region 7 Teacher of the Year

Oak Point Elementary School proudly celebrates one of its own, as teacher Hunter Trivette has been named the Region 7 Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Trivette received the exciting news during a surprise visit from Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jenna Conway, and Secretary of Education, Dr. Jeffrey Smith. The announcement was met with enthusiasm and pride from students, colleagues, and staff.

This recognition highlights Mr. Trivette’s dedication to student success, innovative instructional practices, and commitment to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. His impact extends beyond the classroom, serving as a model of excellence within Oak Point Elementary and across the region.

Smyth County Schools congratulates Mr. Trivette on this well-deserved honor and celebrates his continued contributions to education.

The Smyth County Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, January 22, 2026. We extend our congratulations to all student participants and proudly celebrate Cassie Somervell as the 2026 Spelling Bee Champion. Cassie will represent Smyth County at the regional spelling bee in March.

Textbook Review Opportunity for Families

Smyth County Public Schools will be holding a public review of proposed high-quality instructional materials from February 16, 2026 - February 20, 2026.

Virginia Living Magazine Names Smyth County One of Virginia's Top Public School Systems

In its annual State of Education issue out in April 2025, Virginia Living magazine has named Smyth County Public Schools as one of Virginia's top public school divisions.

Registration for 2025-2026 Pre-K and Kindergarten now open!

Smyth County Schools is now accepting registrations for Pre-K and Kindergarten for the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. Children turning four years old on or before September 30, 2025 can register for Pre-Kindergarten and children turning five years old on or before September 30, 2025 for Kindergarten. Contact the local elementary school in your child's attendance area to register.

K-5 Stem Academy

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center will host a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Academy for students in grades Kindergarten through 5th.

The academy will take place on Tuesdays, October 21 through November 18, 2025.
